At Sophia’s Cleaning Service, green cleaning means using cleaning methods and products with environmentally friendly ingredients and naturally derived chemicals to preserve human health and protect the environment.
It is not a marketing trend. It is a documented, certified, and scientifically backed approach to cleaning that eliminates the synthetic chemical burden from your home and the people inside it.
Here is what most people do not realize: the terms “natural,” “eco-friendly,” “plant-based,” and “non-toxic” have no legal definition in the United States. Any company can print these words on any product regardless of what is actually inside it. This practice is called greenwashing, and it is everywhere in the cleaning industry.

The only claims we recognize as legitimate are those backed by independent third-party certifications: EPA Safer Choice, Green Seal, ECOLOGO, and USDA BioPreferred. Sophia’s is the only IJCSA-certified green cleaning company serving Chicago’s western suburbs. When you choose our green cleaning option, the products we use have been evaluated against these standards. And if you prefer conventional products or have your own supplies you’d like us to use, we’re happy to work with those too.
The 7 Natural Ingredients That Clean Everything
Sophia's green cleaning uses seven core natural ingredients. Combined strategically, they replace over 30 synthetic products without sacrificing cleaning power. Here's what each does:
White Distilled Vinegar
Cuts grease, removes mildew and odors, kills E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and flu viruses.
Baking Soda
Mild abrasive, odor neutralizer (chemically absorbs odors; doesn't mask them), non-toxic, biodegradable.
Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
Kills bacteria, viruses, mold, flu germs, norovirus, and parasites. 5-minute dwell time for full disinfection.H2O2 is just water plus one extra oxygen atom.p>
Castile Soap
Plant-based surfactant, biodegradable, leaves zero toxic residue. Safe for skin and safe for drain pipes.
Lemon Juice
Natural bleach and degreaser. Mixed with olive oil, it's a premium furniture polish that smells incredible.
Tea Tree Oil
Broad-spectrum antimicrobial. Kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi. A little goes a long way.
Salt
Natural abrasive, laundry booster, spill absorber, disinfecting soak for cutting boards.
5 Toxic Chemicals We Avoid
These are in thousands of cleaning products sold today. When you choose our green cleaning option, we avoid these ingredients, opting for safer alternatives instead.
Ammonia
Lung and eye irritant. Creates toxic chloramine gas when mixed with bleach - potentially fatal at high concentrations.
Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach)
Creates toxic gas when mixed with ammonia or vinegar. Damages wood, fabrics, tile. Absorbs through skin. Linked to respiratory issues and eye damage.
Phthalates
Endocrine disruptors hidden on labels under the vague term "fragrance." Linked to reduced testosterone, reproductive harm, and developmental issues.
Butyl Cellosolve (2-Butoxyethanol)
Petroleum-derived nervous system toxin. Penetrates skin rapidly. Used in degreasers and glass cleaners. Reduces sperm counts in animal studies.
Paradichlorobenzene
Carcinogen found in mothballs and pine-scented cleaners. Classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA.

How We Protect Your Family
Every green clean comes with these family-centered protections:
Allergy & Sensitivity Intake
Before your first clean, we ask about allergies, asthma, skin sensitivities, and food-based ingredient concerns (some formulas use peanut oil). We document your preferences permanently and respect them on every visit.
3 Cloth Method Standard
Red cloths for bathrooms, blue for kitchens, green for living areas. Cross-contamination is a terminable offense. This prevents spreading germs between rooms.
HEPA Vacuum Technology
Our HEPA-filtered vacuums remove 99% of bacteria and dust mites without redistributing particles into the air. Perfect for families with asthma or allergies.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Every product we use comes with a published SDS sheet. Request it anytime. You can see exactly what's in every formula and what risks (if any) exist.
Spotting Greenwashing: A Consumer's Guide
Many brands claim to be "green." Few are. Here's how to tell the difference:
These brands market "natural" but are NOT actually green certified:
Red flags in product marketing:
- "Natural" or "eco-friendly" with no third-party certification. These words have no legal definition. Anyone can print them on any product.
- "Made with plant-based ingredients". Doesn't mean it's non-toxic. The formulation matters.
- "Biodegradable" without supporting data. Everything biodegrades eventually; that's not a claim.
- Vague ingredient lists. Legitimate products list all ingredients. Greenwashers hide behind "fragrance" or "proprietary blend."
- "Safer" instead of "safe". Red flag. Safer than what? Still toxic, just less so.
- No third-party certification visible. Look for EPA Safer Choice, Green Seal, ECOLOGO, or USDA BioPreferred logos.
The legitimate certifications we trust:
- EPA Safer Choice. Ingredient-level EPA review
- Green Seal. Science-based nonprofit, strict environmental standards
- ECOLOGO. Lifecycle-based certification (production through disposal)
- USDA BioPreferred. Certified bio-based content from renewable sources
- IJCSA. Professional green cleaning certification (us)
